What is a SIP?

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is a way of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund scheme at regular intervals, usually every month, instead of investing a large sum all at once. Each installment buys more units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high, which averages out the purchase cost over time. Over a long enough horizon, the real driver of the outcome is compounding: the returns you earn also start earning returns.

How is it calculated?

FV = P × [ ((1+r)n − 1) / r ] × (1+r)FV = future value · P = amount invested monthly · r = expected monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12) · n = total number of monthly installments.

Why use this calculator

  • Removes the pressure of timing the market: you invest on a schedule, not a guess
  • Rupee-cost averaging smooths out the effect of short-term volatility
  • Small, regular amounts are easier to commit to than a single large investment
  • Shows clients, in one screen, exactly how a monthly habit compounds over their goal horizon

Who should use it

First-time investors building a long-term habit, salaried clients with a fixed monthly surplus, and advisors who want a quick, visual way to show a prospect what “starting today vs starting in 2 years” actually costs them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the return shown by this calculator guaranteed?

No. The rate of return is an assumption you enter. Actual mutual fund returns vary with market conditions and are never guaranteed. Use this as a planning estimate, not a promise.

What's a realistic rate of return to assume?

It depends on the underlying asset mix. Equity-heavy portfolios have historically returned more over long periods than debt-heavy ones, but also carry more short-term volatility. Match the assumption to what you'd actually recommend for the goal's time horizon.

Does this account for inflation?

No. This shows nominal future value. For a goal where today’s cost matters, like retirement or education 15+ years out, use the Future Goal (Inflation-Adjusted) calculator instead.

Can I increase my SIP amount every year?

Yes. A step-up SIP does exactly that. This calculator supports a step-up percentage so you can model a client's SIP rising alongside their income.
